Halloween Party on a Budget!

Quote straight from the mouth of a 5 year old, “This was the best Halloween party ever!”   All the kids will have a blast and this party on a budget comes in at $100.  That includes food, costumes, deocrations and drinks.  I bought some great decorations at the Dollar Tree, and found a few more at Wal-mart.  We had the usual chips and dip, some cheese dip and tortilla chips, sandwhich rolls, sugar cookies, cake, green punch, a weenie roast and smores on the grill.

When it was time for weenies and smores we went outside on the back deck and fired up the small charcoal grill and we used skewers to do our roasting.  It was a lot of fun.  We also had a costume contest where everyone was a winner and an apple bobbing contest.  That was quite hilarious to see all the kids trying to get an apple.  We told a few stories had some treat bags full of candy and toys.  I had a blast and so did all the kids.  We took pictures of them all and made spider frames to put them in.  So we even had a craft.

It wasn’t extravagant, it wasn’t expensive…but it was so much fun!!

Stay tuned for the recipes, costume pictures and more…..

Who will you be this Halloween?

Hey Y’all!

Are you dressing up for Halloween?  I can’t tell you the last time I dressed up in costume for Halloween or at all for that matter.  I’m sure it was, well I’ll just keep that to myself.  Since we are hosting a small family Halloween party I’ve decided to dress up as well.  In the article above about the Halloween party I stated that I don’t like too scary so I’m going with a witch but not the green faced type….I’m going for a more witchy bling type so it’ll be a spin of a witch, fairy god mother, and the pretty witch of the east!  I’m gonna use a formal dress from my closet and my fake bling jewelry, buy a few accessories like glitter and of course a wand, no broom for me..LOL

Take a look in your closet and see what you can find to make a costume even if it’s just to hand out candy.  Some crazy clothes combinations and some weird makeup is all it takes and you don’t have to spend a dime it you don’t want to!

Crafty, Cute and Easy!

Halloween Spider picture frame

Supplies Needed

  • 4×6 black picture frame (table top style, make sure the wood part of the frame is thick/wide)
  • 2 large black pom poms
  • 2 large craft eyes
  • black craft feathers
  • black pipe cleaners
  • 1 tube white fabric paint
  • 2 tubes of your favorite colors fabric paint
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

Making the Spider

  1. Position your frame so that it is in the landscape orientation.  Make sure your glue gun is ready and glue the two black pom-poms on the top, middle of the frame.  Then glue the two big eyeballs on the front of the pom poms.  Next you’ll glue the feathers on top of the pom poms to make them look like fuzzy eyebrows.
  1. Next you’ll attach the spider legs using the black pipe cleaners (chenille sticks).  Start with 4 and make sure they vary slightly in lengths then glut those to the back of the frame about 1/4 to 1/2 way down the side of the frame.  You want to be able to curl the bottoms slightly but you still want them to touch the table top. Then repeat the next side.
  2. Now that you have the eyes and legs you’ll want to get the white fabric paint and give the spider a nose and mouth just under his eyes (right on top of the frame)
  3. At the bottom take one of your favorite colors you picked and write “Trick or Treat” you may want to use a crayon first to make sure you like the placement and then trace it.
  4. Next, decorate the edges of the frame with the other color you picked to use and create dots all around the outer edge of the frame and the inner edge of the frame next to the glass.  (see picture below)

Let the paint dry and Voila!  You have a cute decoration and awesome frame to put your favorite Halloween picture in each year.  You can also make this as a gift for someone or use this as a craft for kids at preschool or church!

*This was my first attempt at this craft and you can see why I’ve suggested to use crayon to write out “trick or treat” first :-)

Halloween

I know it’s a bit early but hey I’ve seen Halloween gear and candy hitting the stores so it got me pumped. I like Halloween, well actually I like the pumpkins and gold colors and bright leaves and candy that comes with Halloween. I do like a good pumpkin carving and roasting pumpkin seeds….mmmmm. Halloween itself and all the costumes quite frankly scared me as a kid. I remember being so upset at an adult Halloween party that my parents went to that I got a fever of over 100 degrees and we had to go home, I ws TERRIFIED. My momma also claims that I jumped once when I dressed up as a witch one year for Halloween and then I wouldn’t look in the mirror again. Sounds crazy huh? I don’t remember that at all but perhaps it frightened me so that I forgot..LOL.

That part I’ve always liked best about Halloween is getting a costume ready. We always (we being my brother and me) tried to think outside the box and I usually like to be something that wasn’t scary for obvious reasons listed above!! :) I remember many a Halloween with me, momma and my brother at the kitchen table making our costumes. It was always so much fun. Usually baking went along with Halloween too. I guess me and my brother once we were in school must have asked for certain things like a cat cake and momma didn’t have any shaped pans but somehow she’d always make what we asked for and have unique ideas to make it happen….I tend to search the internet or magazines for ideas but she just came up with them! It’s really uncanny and sometimes she still does it and I have to say it annoys me sometimes how clever she is…just kidding…why do you think I call her all the time!!

Now that I’m a mother of two I’m doing the same thing with my boys. Every year we try to think outside the box and pick a character or object that fits their personality and make a costume. They have been so darn cute! This year not only am I going to make their costume, have no idea what yet but I’ll also be making the some personalized paint cans for trick or treating. This year is going to be the best I tell you. I’m also gonna have my 5 yr old help me design a mini wrapper and mintbook to give his classmates the perfect Halloween treat as well as for our church trunk or treat.

This holiday season is going to be so much fun, full of so many ideas and the ideas just keep coming.

What traditions do you and your family celebrate with Halloween? What will you dress up to be this year?

I love getting your comments so comment away!

Halloween-October 31

The candy and costumes are out! Yes, it is that time of year again. Fall has approached us and the next celebration is HALLOWEEN.
I remember Halloween as such a fun time as a kid. My brother and me would decide what character or ghoul we wanted to be and we would help our mom make the costumes. WHAT?? Yes, you heard me, make the costumes. One year I wanted to have a store bought costume and in the early 80′s they weren’t the best things in the world. If you were trick or treating in the same era you will remember that most of the store bought kid’s costumes were made of very thin vinyl, they tied on the sides and back and the mask was plastic, uncomfortable and you could barely breath with it on. Well, that was the last year I wanted a store bought costume. I love candy but the best part of Halloween was deciding what or who to be and then making the costume. One year I was Pippy Long Stocking. We used a wire hanger to make my braids stick out to the side just like the character!
Now that I have two boys of my own my favorite part of Halloween is still making the costumes. My sons are young and the oldest is old enough this year to truly understand what Halloween is and pick out his own costume. Although, I have talked him into being a bubble gum machine and his little brother is going to be the quarter! I like to pick things that identify with my boy’s characters. The oldest, the bubble gum machine, loves bubble gum and every time we go to a store I must have a quarter. It saves me a tantrum…haha…and it keeps him happy while I shop. The first year my son went trick or treating I dressed him up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. He was so cute! He actually won cutest costume at the community party!! The next year we made a scarecrow costume, straw and all.

That was cute too….about half way through the receiving of candy he finally realized what was going on and didn’t want to stop :) Last year he was a bag of Doritoes and his little brother, who was only 5 months old at the time, was in a baby pack. He was the bumble bee and I was the flower. When making all these costumes I used things we had around the house and used clothes that they boys would be growing out of soon and in some cases clothes were modified to fit. I do have a sewing machine and I can sew a few things but for the most part on the costumes I used hot glue. The Dough boy I did have to sew and made a one piece outfit for the body suit by combining a onesie and a pair of pajama pants that were too long. The scarf and hat I made out of cloth diapers we didn’t use any more(don’t worry, I used the cloth diapers as burping cloths!)

I can’t wait to start making this year’s costumes! I’m not sure how I will be making them yet but I will come oup with something creative!
Remember to be safe on Halloween, carry flashlights and if you have trick or treating in neighborhoods or areas where cars will be driving wear something reflective that drivers can see.
Parents remember to inspect your child’s candy before letting them eat any and of course don’t let them eat too much BECAUSE you definitely want the kids to get to bed instead of jumping around the house on a sugar high…LOL
If you will be celebrating Halloween at an adult party with adult beverages PLEASE designate a driver, a sober one!!
As for me and my family we will be in the church parking lot having a party and trunk or treating!
Happy Halloween!
